Dust
context In our individualized and atomized societies, with the retreat of the organized religions out of general public life and the industrializing of death, fewer and fewer hints about one of our most important existential conditions can be found anymore: our transitoriness. Death and transitoriness is in our medial society a seldomly touched subject. The individual is left to his own devices in dealing with this existential questions. The commercial media show no interest to change anything about this condition. On the opposite, products can be better sold with the fear of it. "Dust" is a interactive installation, that dissolves the shadow of a spectator into dust, with the help of a computer simulation. It was designed with the intention to create a medial artefact to counter the tendency of suppressing the fact of ones own transitoriness. The work was developed as a follow up of the vanitas pictures of the middle ages, where death depicted as skeletons dances around the people shown in everyday scenes in order to remind them of their transitoriness. sequences technical description step by step guide for back projection: |
